I am only a chapter into this book but can already tell that it is well written and that much research and knowledge has been put into it. I am a Westerner who was raised Christia, but found myself drawn into Eastern religion in search of answers left by Christianity. I discovered that HInduism resonated with me, and ended up meeting and falling in love with a Hindu man. I flew to India to marry him and ended up living there for 14 months. Being emersed within the culture further intrigued me and drove my desire to learn more about the gods, particularly the ones I found myself most drawn to, which are Ganesh and Hanuman. My husband tells me stories that he learned throughout his upbringing, but they are often confusing when hearing bits and pieces at random times. So I purchased Hanuman: The Devotion and Power of the Monkey God by Vanamali Devi. It is exactly what I was hoping for. It explains so much without feeling biased. She points out that there are variations in beliefs depending on the type of followers and the areas of India. However, despite these differences, there is a unified, mutual depiction of what Hanuman stands for throughout India. I think my husband will admire this book. I am so grateful to have found such a wonderful book, written in very good English, that allows Westerners to be included in the stories of Hanuman and other deities. Especially since most original writings throughout history have been in Sanskrit and other languages, or just passed down through word of mouth. With authors like Vanamali, more and more Westerners will be able to embrace Hinduism and find answers they have long sought after.

this book, like others written by the author, mixes both story and spiritual teachings to convey the basic message of Hanuman's story. I've found this book, as well as others by this author, to help the reader find the substance to the "teachings" which are often hidden within more convoluted tellings by doing so in a very human, and caring way.of Vanamali's books, this is my favorite for personal reasons, but overall, for those wishing to learn the meaning behind the stories, Vanamali does a really good job, and I wholeheartedly recommend her books to people who are curious about the various topics which Vanamali has covered in her books.

I am so pleased I got this book. It tells the tale of Hanuman in service to Ram when the demon king Ravana kidnapped Ram's consort, Sita. The story is meant to convey how, like Sita, we are separated from the Divine ground of our being by the passions and misunderstandings of our small ego (Ravana) and how we are reconnected by love and devotion, qualities which Hanuman embodies. Hanuman is the link between our physical being and our Divine being, and that connection is always at work to bring conscious awareness to our lives.As a devotee of Hanuman, I recommend this retelling of the story, found in the Ramayana. It is easy to read and helps open the heart of true seekers, which is what these stories were always meant to do. Enjoy.

An excellent read, I was used to Ramanaya as a kid when growing up as a story, but this book helped get a different perspective on things and events.

Those Hindu stories are full of amazing out of the box happenings. I am enjoying learning Hanuman's story.

I hadn't particularly intended to read the Ramayana, but Vanamali's lovely book took me through it - focusing of its selfless hero, Hanuman. This is a wonderful telling of the story and so many curious aspects are included, most valuablly the esoteric inner meanings of some of the demons that Hanuman and Rama are up against. E.g. that Kumbakarna is "tamas" (sloth) embodied while Ravana represents the insatiable appetite of "rajas"(passion/addiction).It's also interesting that sections are according to the Valmiki original that aren't popularly told in India. This book is a treat for those who would like to understand all the characters from the Ramayana - the demons, the heroes - and of course especially for those who would like to understand Lord Hanuman better.(Please Vanamali - put more of your books on Kindle!)

This is my favorite book by this author. Very beautiful. Unfortunately I bought 4 more of her books (thinking they also would be wonderful) and they were not at all. This one though is magic.

It is phenomenally well-written, so well written in fact that I want to get a subscription to the WSJ so I can keep reading what this author writes. The amount of research, outlined by the author at the beginning of the book, is so staggering that I found myself compelled to find out what that amount of research could yield. Although the title of the book seems to give that away, there is so much more to learn than simply that.The principles that unfold in each chapter are those that can be extended into so many areas of life and business for women and men alike, which on balance makes a whole lot of sense, but is not always in-your-face obvious. When I lamented to friends that I wasn't sure about my son wanting to play college sports, those who owned some very successful and prominent businesses wasted no time telling me that a resume with "team captain" of any sport on it automatically pushed that candidate to the top of the list of potential hires.This book made the reasoning behind that crystal clear."The Captain Class" initially piqued my interest mostly because my son was captain of his high school and college lacrosse teams and I suppose I wanted to have more insight into what that position entailed than I had as a "sports mom" who went to the games, but had know idea what anyone out on the field was doing.So that...and also because of the chapter on the Steelers which no self-respecting Pittsburgh-born person could pass up.

For that I am eternally grateful.Part I of the book describes the process by which he takes all the successful sports teams, from many time periods, from almost all sports, and he applies various sieves to disqualify candidates so that he has a manageable number of candidates to analyze. This alone is a large job, and a contentious one that would involve just about every denizen of every sports bar and pub the world over. I won’t get into his process, needless to say it will be the start of many a conversation, and his reasoning and explanation should be read and thought over by the reader.The author comes up with sixteen teams. Sixteen iconic teams that the author labeled as his Tier One teams; by the way, he helpfully lists the Tier One teams and the Tier two teams in the appendix of the book, i.e. those teams that barely missed being tier one. This appendix will be well thumbed in the future by this reader.The next daunting task is to examine at all the teams and to come to a conclusion as what made these teams Tier one, what drove them to being so salient amongst the many, which factor defined the success of that team. This is yet another impossible task, one that will also be debated ad infinitum. Once again, the author does an admirable and thoughtful job of considering a large number of factors and then writing an erudite defense of his analysis. Again, this is argument fodder amongst the denizens of the bars and pubs as well as the denizens of board rooms, think tanks, B schools, and consulting firms.His conclusion is that what drives the bus for these teams, are the captains of these teams, a throwback position in our entitlement society, a society that disdains hierarchy and a position that serves the greater good of the team. He explains why he moved past the mythical and iconoclastic belief in the coach, or the idolatry of the superstar athlete and settled on the water carrying captain. Again, I won’t repeat his arguments from the book because he does a much better job than I ever will, since he carried the water for the book and I think his argument, the way he phrased it, is important for the reader to absorb and consider.Part II of the book lists seven qualities that the author feel are unique and defining for a Tier one captain. He describes in depth, using anecdotes and extensive interviews with those captains, the unique and critical qualities that make these men and women so very successful and so very unique. Each chapter is a cogent explanation of each quality that the author feels is crucial for the success of each of these captains.Part III is the counterexample. The story of the Tier 2 captains, who had all the necessary qualities, except for that one critical quality which doomed them to Tier 2 rather than Tier 1, a cautionary tale.The well-trod path that the author did not go down is the path of the ubiquitous and trite path of the vast majority of business books. This book could very easily have become a mish mash retelling of the same points and sold as a formulaic recipe for success. The bane of the modern day business world is this formulaic grinding out of uninteresting and useless tomes detailing simplistic recitations of some Powerpoint bullets.Sam Walker has too much respect for the subject; more importantly, he appreciates the complexity and coupled nature of the successful captaincy. He has lain out what he feels is super salient about these captains and he is smart enough to not lead the reader to believe that the results of the great captain can be duplicated simplistically. He leaves it to us to try to put the facts together, to think about the ramifications of what we can do to develop those seven qualities, either for ourselves or as a coach or teacher for a student.As I finished the book, I was actually hoping for some pithy summation for my convenience, but in the end, I was grateful that he avoided the clichéd business school content. Now I can think deeply and critically on his arguments.To be fair, the author does reiterate the major points that he wanted to make at the end of each chapter, but it is a re-statement of the argument and not a how-to guide.Whether you are a sports fan, a coach, a consultant, or anyone having to do with developing people into leaders, this is an excellent and challenging addition to your library.

This is one of the best books I've read. I've worked as a teacher and coach for about a decade and have transitioned into the field of sport psychology over the last five years or so. With that, I do a lot of reading on different concepts within sports, coaching, sport psych, pop psych, etc. The concepts of culture and leadership have become big buzz topics in the sports world, and there is a lot of fluff out there. What I loved about this book is it fights through the fluff with years of intensive research on the world's greatest athletic teams of all time to provide a fantastic read incorporating stories, well-explained research, and substantive takeaways. It's outstanding and will be a great read for you if you're a coach, athlete, parent, or just a fan of sports. This will be one of those books that stands the test of time in the field of sports and coaching. Hope you give it a shot and enjoy!

The idea of a "team captain" seems to be as relevant today as a "letterman jacket": everyone has one so it doesn't really carry any significance (& who would wear it now anyway?).After reading this book, the idea of a team captain seems CRITICAL in the development of a great team. Great teams are led by elite team captains and knowing what to look for isn't always what you might think. Most team captains are picked based on popularity or seniority, but after reading this book the selection of our team captain will change dramatically.As a coach, I learned a lot from this book but as a fan of the game, I found the stories and research fascinating. Very enjoyable read.

About the Author

Nita Tewari (Ph.D., Counseling Psychology, Southern Illinois University, 2000) is a second generation Indian American whose parents emigrated from India about 40 years ago.  She was born in Los Angeles County, was raised and resides in Orange County, California.  She completed her bachelor’s in psychology from the University of California, Irvine and her doctoral internship at the University of California, Los Angeles Student Psychological Services. She earned her master's in psychology and doctorate in counseling psychology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.  She has served in the positions of Research Psychologist at California State University Long Beach, Clinical Researcher at the University of California Irvine, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and Staff Psychologist in the Counseling Center and Adjunct Faculty in the School of Social Sciences and Asian American Studies at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).  She has taught Asian American Psychology at UCI, has provided clinical services to university students and published in multicultural psychology on Indian/South Asian American and Asian American mental health.  In 2002, she co-founded the South Asian Psychological Networking Association (SAPNA), a listserv and website dedicated to connecting individuals interested in South Asian American mental health concerns.  Dr. Tewari has also served as the past Co-Chair of the Division on Women for the Asian American Psychological Association and served as a writer for Audrey Magazine.  Dr. Tewari will be serving as the Vice President of the Asian American Psychological Association for the 2008-2009 term and continues to focus on Asian American mental health issues while being married and raising her two children. 

 

Alvin Alvarez (Ph.D., Counseling Psychology, University of Maryland, 1996) immigrated to the US from Cebu, Philippines when he was five and was raised in Long Beach, California. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California at Irvine in biological sciences and psychology. An Asian American Psychology course sparked his passion in Asian American issues, so he dropped his plans for medical school and earned his doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Maryland at College Park. Currently, he is a Professor and Coordinator of the College Counseling Program at San Francisco State University, where he trains masters-level students to be college counselors and student affairs practitioners. His personal and professional interests focus on Asian Americans, racial identity, and the psychological impact of racism. Dr. Alvarez is currently conducting community-based studies funded by the National Institute of Mental Health to examine how Chinese-Americans, Pilipino-Americans, and Vietnamese-Americans perceive and cope with racism. In the long term, Dr. Alvarez aims to develop community-based interventions to help Asian Americans cope with racism in constructive ways. Dr. Alvarez served as the President of the Asian American Psychological Association and has been involved in national-level projects and initiatives, advocating for all oppressed groups. He received the Early Career Award for Distinguished Contributions from the Asian American Psychological Association and the Tanaka Memorial Dissertation Award from the American Psychological Association. Consistent with his belief that psychologists serve the communities they came from, Dr. Alvarez is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the community mental health center Richmond Area Multi-Services (RAMS) in San Francisco.
